The Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit

On the site of the former Baroque church of the Franciscan friars, completed in 1748, a new church was built in the popular eclectic style of the time, based on the plans of architect Kálmán Rimanóczy Jr. Construction took place between 1903 and 1905. Although the tower, built in 1871, was preserved by Rimanóczy Jr., it was modified to ensure stylistic harmony with the new building.

While the original Franciscan church was rebuilt from the ground up, the crypt of the Franciscan friars beneath it remained untouched. In the 1980s, this crypt became the final resting place of several well-known citizens of Oradea, after the former Olosig cemetery — often called the “Házsongárd of Oradea” — fell victim to communist urban planning. Among those reinterred here are the church’s architect, Kálmán Rimanóczy Jr. and his family, as well as Erzsébet Fráter, wife of the renowned Hungarian writer Imre Madách.
