“The Tenderest Flowers of the Soul Blossomed in the Village.”
A selection from the ethnographic collection of Rudolf Raáb, a collector from Oradea
If he were still alive, the beloved Oradea-based collector Rudolf Raáb, a dental technician by profession, would have celebrated his 90th birthday this year. During the darkest decades of communism, he assembled one of the most valuable ethnographic collections in Transylvania, which he donated to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oradea in 2010. A small exhibition drawn from this remarkable legacy, comprising tens of thousands of objects, opened in September in the exhibition space on the second floor of the Roman-Catholic Episcopal Palace in Oradea.
The exhibition, entitled “The Tenderest Flowers of the Soul Blossomed in the Village,” explores the more archaic layers of rural ethnography and offers a glimpse into the role of ceramics and wood in traditional households.
